UV rays reflect off all surfaces, so it can damage your steering wheel even if it's in the shade. It pierces cloud cover as well.
SA has the 2nd highest incidence of skin cancer in the world, so we should know about these things.

Oh yes, an original Toyota steering wheel is something to be taken care of, when your car is in pretty bad shape on the exterior
