So for lunch yesterday I decided on a steak gatsby from Cosy Corner in Wynberg. Get there and they're advertising their masala or grilled steak gatsby on a quality pic and I notice that their asking price is R98 for a chargrilled steak gatsby. I place my order for a full house steak gatsby and the bill comes to R119. I ask the cashier why the board says R98, a difference of R21 and she tells me that the gatsby advertised for R98 is the chips, salads and steak gatsby. To add cheese and eggs will add R10.50 + R10.50.
I'm like WTF. So I ask her why they don't advertise the price for a full house and the manager, who was standing in close proximity, intervenes. He apologises and says that the cashier should have advised me that the full house gatsby would cost an extra R21. So I ask why they don't advertise the price for the full house and he says "the cashier should have told you it would cost extra".
I tell him that either I'm out of touch with pricing but R98 is moer toe expensive for a plain, no frills gatsby and that R120 for a full house is a rip off. Also told him the reason why they don't advertise the price for a full house at R120 is obvious - its a farking rip off. Then I get home and the steak in unchewable!
Call them and the manager tells me to bring it back and he will have another one ready. Collect it and when I get back I find that they didn't replace my full house but gave me the standard gatsby. Didn't have lis to call and fight again so ate what I had.

ay ay ay... rufff tym there boet....id like to apologise on behalf of the food and beverage industry..... that was very bad service... there should be more SubWays and such ..... but seriously dude i would never pay R98 for a sumthing that is essentially a sandwich... o and btw a gatsby by the standard is supposed to come with fried egg and cheese.......

That is way too much for a gatsby. You could have gotten Steers or even sit down at Spur with you better half and gotten a nice meal for around R 140 - R 160 including drinks. 9 out of 10 times I will just buy something to cook or braai than eating out. Besides Gatsby's is not good for you.

R98 is for a plain steak gatsby. Its R119 for a fullhouse! I see Aneesa's also advertise their fullhouse steak gatsby @ R114. Are they j@s?

as a gatsby lover i won't try and justify their high prices, but have you ever compared mariam's to any other gatsby place out there? it's really above the rest. it would probably be the rolls royce of gatsby's whereas any other place would be your average toyota, golf, nissan opel etc. the only place i would ever pay that much for a gatsby is mariams. anywhere else they can go to hell because their food is crap. mariams has perfectly cooked steak, their chips are much better, you get all gold tomato sauce (not some red substance that resembles tomato sauce) and all their other sauces are quality sauces. their rolls and salads are always fresh and their gatsbies are bigger than the rest. but after praising them... i wouldn't mind if they dropped the price below the R100 mark oh and for your situation... i would call back and say their purse and then hello peter them also

agree with 8vs, you pay R120 for a vienna and polony gatsby at Mariams
I will never complain though about food to the extent that it is returned with a new plate, you just never know what the disgruntled preparers at the back do.

Honestly don't see the value in buying a gatsby anymore.

I don't know hey, Mariams food is really good.
Except for their prices you can't really fault the food. If Mariams was open til later I would buy their food over any Nandos meal.

Think I had a mariams salomi last year. It didnt blow me away compared to salomis I've had at other mom n pop take-away joints
In any case, these days I cook my own food. if i feel like take out, its either nandos, simply asia, or St Elmos for pizza.

I find Mariams food so over priced. Their gatsby's are not the best. Try Time to Eat in Cape Town Station food court..
They have a half Full house masala gatsby for R38... Fresh everything...
