Opel is preparing to finally remove the covers from two very, but equally exciting new models: the Corsa-based Mokka SUV and Russelsheim’s hottest hot hatch yet, the latest Astra OPC.

Under the theme “Driving into the future” the new Mokka is the German automaker’s first foray into the SUV B-segment. Ford recently revealed it too would campaign a global vehicle in that segment, called the EcoSport and based on the Fiesta.

The petite Mokka is based on Opel’s Corsa hatchback and measures just 4.28 metres long, but the automaker says it is able to comfortably seat five people.

COMPACT, BUT CAPABLE

Despite its size, Opel assures the Mokka will combine its attractive design with edgy technologies and features more commonly seen in larger SUVs, such as driver assistance systems based on the Opel Eye camera system.

The Mokka will be introduced with three engines: an 85kW 1.6, 103kW 1.4 Turbo and a 96kW 1.7 CDTI turbodiesel.

Front- and all-wheel-drive configurations are both available in the Mokka. The part-time all-wheel drive system automatically and seamlessly transfers power to the rear wheels when higher levels of traction are required.

Standard features include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and traction control as well as the hill start assist and hill descent control systems.

Opel’s flagship SUV is not sold in South Africa, but we do hope the 143kW/400Nm engine, which is said to slurp around 4.9 litres of fuel per 100km, eventually makes it way down south.

Our spies have caught the forthcoming Vauxhall Corsa based SUV out testing again and we can see enough to produce this rendering of what the production car could look like when it hits the streets in 2012. In Ireland and on the continent the car will be badged an Opel.

We refer to it as Corsa based, but in reality this will be the first Vauxhall badged car to use this platform. Developed by GM Daewoo in Korean, it’s the ‘Gamma II’ platform that has already spawned the Chevrolet Spark and Aveo. Vauxhall Opel’s Russelheim, Germany based engineers will use it as the basis of all the company’s small cars in Europe, replacing the ‘SCCS’ platform that underpins the current Corsa D and Fiat Punto (after GM and Fiat signed a joint venture). This SUV will be the first Vauxhall on the platform, closely followed by a replacement for today’s Corsa and the new Allegra city car. There will also be a Chevrolet badged sub-compact SUV based on this platform too, codenamed the ‘T2X’.

For engines the as yet unnamed SUV will rely on the Corsa, Meriva MPV and new Astra, with a four cylinder 1.4 litre turbo petrol with 120PS or 140PS; a 1.6 petrol with 180PS; and a four cylinder 1.7 litre diesel engine with either 110 or 130PS. An EcoFLEX 1.3 diesel is also a possibility, with 95PS, focused on low fuel consumption and emissions. Transmissions will be five or six speed manuals or an automatic. Two and four wheel drive versions will be available, both sporting the raised ride height.

The car will take on the Nissan Juke and MINI Countyman, as well as forthcoming mini SUVs based on the Ford Fiesta and Peugeot 208. It is expected to be better equipped and more luxurious than its mainstream rivals, however, and will debut a new multimedia ‘infotainment’ system being developed for the whole Vauxhall range. Due in 2012
