startup failed *Fixed by using the Start up repair loop*

So this morning as I'm working on my laptop it goes into a freeze mode, so I switch the laptop off via the power button, reboot the system and I get this message start up failed so I selected the recommended repair thing after a while I get a message saying windows cannot automatically repair the start up thing, so I proceed to the advance settings and select recover, I get the message it can't find any recovery points

Anyway I cancel that option and select recover from image which allows me to browse through my files but to no avail, I find absolutely jack recovery stuff but I can see all my folders and files.

Just wanted to know what's the next step? Do I need a windows cd to repair the startup or what?

Anyhelp would be appreciated, I just need to get my info off the hard drive if it boils down to that but I don't know how to do it.

Oh its windows 7 32bit the laptop can handle. Windows 64bit I just didn't have the time to upgrade it.

Have you installed or removed any programs/software lately?
The recovery tool is only going to help if you have created restore points..

Is there absolutely no way to get to the desktop right now? Like skipping the recovery tool?

No way at all safe mode doesn't even want to run.

I am tempted to say that your whole OS has become corrupted, but I have no idea why it would happen out of the blue.
Have you dropped the laptop at all? And how old is it, since hard drives have around 5 years of life expectancy..

Do you receive any message like this on boot?

Nah it doesn't give that, it boots up and then the windows sign comes shortly after that the screen turns blue with white writing and it automatically restarts. Nope I haven't dropped it yet and its about 2yrs old now.

Windows 7 is easy to repair especially if you have a system disk. Windows 8 is pathetic. Even with the original disc the chance of you repairing the system is slim to none...

Create a bootable disc. Will save you loads of time and swearing... My win8 has crashed 3 times this month. Both 64bit and 32bit. Way too unstable.
